A late starter to photography, I've always had a desire to create something artistic, whether it's in music, cooking, travel, or fabric. Life without art or beauty would be so ordinary. Through photography, I am now appreciating the art that surrounds my daily life, in the most ordinary of ways; the energy of my swimming dogs, the foraging of cardinals at the bird feeder, the excitement of children in mundane activities, and the beauty of light on an early Carolina morning. My other life, parallel with photography, is that of a teacher. I've taught school for more than 39 years. Combining my two loves, teaching and photography, is a developing part of my life. My students are often a captive audience, and they are often my best critics. As photography becomes more and more digital and computer based, I find my students' skills in photography more closely approximate mine, both an exciting and daunting discovery. Ask a fourth grader to try using Photoshop in changing images, and some amazing pictures are created. My students are fearless with a camera in hand, and they constantly teach me new vision. I live in Northwest NC, with my husband, a college professor and amazing musician, two dogs (Lester and Earl), two cockatiels (Kanga and Roo) and Homer, a playful, talkative African Grey parrot. |
